It is an amazing birthday. This little, beloved puppy is Maddie from the F Litter…

And Miss Maddie is TWELVE today. Barb shares this Birthday Report:

Miss Maddie had a wonderful day today.  In fact, Maddie would tell you that she has a wonderful day EVERY day!  Maddie sensibly takes no notice of the calendar, so she didn’t realize that it was, in fact, her TWELFTH birthday.  We humans, who obsess over the passage of time, did appreciate this remarkable achievement, made bittersweet with the memory of Maddie’s littermates who are no longer with us today.  We marked the day with a socially isolated celebration, highlighted by a special, dog bone shaped, peanut butter, yoghurt and carrot birthday cake, made by Maddie’s Bestie Baxter the Newfie’s Mom.  While Maddie may not have realized why she got the special goodies, she wasted no time in snurfling it down.  And she enjoyed all the other delights of her usual day, including walks at the Park and lounging in the yard and barking at passersby.

We stopped by Café Tenby for tea for the humans and cookies for the dogs.

Yum!  Love that Greek yoghurt frosting!  Thanks Aunt Kathy!

I am Queen of all I survey.

I love my Mommy (and my Daddy too…but he’s taking the picture).

And thank you, Mary-Ann, once again and always, for sending me this vibrant, smart, and feisty girl, my constant companion!

Thank you, Barb, for the update and for Maddie’s amazingly awesome life. Okay, Miss Maddie — thirteen is next! You got this!

Maddie is the littermate of the Wildflowers’ grandfather, Zed — that makes her an especially great-great Auntie to Buttercup and they even live relatively close to each other. Therefore, it is a perfect day for Georgia to answer our favorite question: What’s Up, Buttercup?

"Buttercup has had a busy week....

…and it hasn't been all play either.  She's been "boning up" on her competition obedience.  She's rock solid on 'sit', 'come' 'down' and 'stand' and she's improving on "stay" (we just work on stay for a few seconds, mostly emphasizing the release cue).

Buttercup studies.jpg

We had our first swimming lesson this week (with more to come).   It was a splashing good time but a little scary for Buttercup who thought she was floating in a giant water dish.

Buttercup thought her instructor was pretty nice (she is!!) but I think it was a little bit of "any port in a storm".

We went to a local park that had a big dragon.  I was surprised to find that the Native Indians in this area had a legend about the dragon (and thus why there was a dragon in the park :-).

I had long thought that the area we lived in looked like a dragon on the map of Washington state.  We live in the "Heart of the Dragon",  Caleb, Penny & Zeus live in the wing and Barbara & Maddie live by the eye of the dragon.

I have been involved with a therapy dog group (with many of my dogs going back fifteen years when we first moved here) and I hope to have Buttercup pass the therapy dog test in the near future.  I volunteer with two programs: Read to Rover (where 2nd grade children who are reading below grade level get to read to dogs) and Pets to People (where dogs visit the residents of a Senior home).  Right now we're not able to do either of these two things because of Covid.  Today the director of the program (who also happens to be the AKC Evaluator for Buttercup's CGC title) emailed to ask if we would be willing to do a virtual reading program with the school.  She said that she wanted Buttercup to be the guest of honor. I told her not to tell Buttercup because it will just go to her head and her head is big enough as it is!

Buttercup thinks she's a Rock Star.

A Rock Star indeed!

Thank you so much to Georgia for the update and all the photos — including of Maddie as a puppy. What a grand life Buttercup is having with Patty, Georgia, and the rest of the gang.

Please have a happy day in honor of Maddie, and in memory of the F Litter who are celebrated always in our hearts.

A Sparkler Birthday!

I thought it would be fun to see the Sparkler photos in a slide show — and it is! But I cannot figure out how to label with names so you will have to guess!

Lori sends us this Ruthie Update: “Ruthie has grown into a lovely, loving, sweet and versatile girl. This has been a busy year for her, learning new skills and having fun adventures. In April she earned her Novice Draft Dog title in her first ever draft test. We have been training for obedience and hope to enter our first trial early in the new year.

She became quite the swimmer this year at "our" lake in Maine. She is seldom on leash when we are there because she stays with me and has a reliable recall. I love being able to give her that freedom.

Her temperament is outstanding, being particularly kind to timid dogs and puppies. Ruthie is incredibly snuggly and never misses an opportunity to climb into my lap, where she is most welcome.

We wish all her Sparkler siblings a super happy 3rd birthday!”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUTHIE!

Ashlee sends us this report about Abbie: “We can’t even believe that Abbie is 3!!! Happy Birthday sweet girl!!  She is just the best!! She loves playing with her little brother and is quiet the babysitter.  She’s always up for a romp, a walk, a snuggle, a snack or just a good lean.  We love her so!! She keeps us company, she keeps us safe and she makes us laugh.  What would we do without her.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ABBIE!

Kay and Sue report about Lucas: “How can our baby Lucas be 3 already? He’s such a sweet boy and lots of fun. He loves to spin and twirl. His favorite game is bringing me leaves and sticks as presents so I will give him a weenie treat. Unfortunately, Lucas lost his playmate and best friend Micah this week so we'll be busy keeping him entertained. We're spending the holidays at home (and I do like a green Christmas). We wish all of the Sparklers and their people a wonderful holiday season.”

Condolences to them on the loss of sweet Micah and HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCAS! Bittersweet indeed.

Alison sends us this Kiri update: Kiri reminds us daily of how much practice she puts into perfecting the essence of being adorably cute. Her specialty is upside down with a toy in her mouth, a huge grin and a wagging tail. She LOVES snow, the deeper the better, and Mother Nature indulged her in early December with 28" through which she bounded, tunneled, pounced and bounced with unbridled joy.  Her regular indoor wrestling matches with Uncle Tristan reliably rearrange both furniture and rugs. Outside, they target and chase each other with astounding speed and athleticism. Kiri is a dedicated bed puppy and frequently joins us for most of each night. She is a superior heater puppy whether curled close in bed or on my feet in the evenings. Cuddle dog deluxe. We will always be delighted that Ms Chalice Peak came to NH to remain close to Tumble Mountain.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kiri!

Kathy sends us our Zimmer report:Zimmer is a goofie, freckle-faced boy.  We have had a very eventful year and consequently formal training has taken a backseat.  We have retired, sold our home of 45 years, and moved to two different states.  We split our time between Wickenburg, AZ and Kansas City and have driven between them many times.  We are in San Diego for Christmas.  Luckily Zimmer is an excellent traveler and has been a wonderful companion to our 7 year old, 5 year old, and 18 month old grandsons.  What a wonderful temperament.  We look forward to a New Year with more time spent on training and fun.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Zimmer!

Tony sent along photos of Ze.D — can you tell which ones are him? HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ze.D!

An Amazing Birthday!

Eleven years ago the Glitterati arrived on the earth to spread love and joy. Like all things Life, their presence also brought tears as each lived their lifetime and left; three in the past year.

We remember the ones who have left us on what would have been their eleventh birthday here on earth: Murphy, Mika, Sydney, Ruben, Zaida, Rainy, and Tara. Happy Birthday to each of them — we remember them always, with love.

AND we celebrate their brother, Cooper, on the occasion of his eleventh birthday! Jennifer sends us this update:

“I’m not quite sure what to say or where to start. This boy holds my heart. His birthday is such a celebration but also such a reminder of time passing and what’s still to come. I find myself being happy and sad with each day of his life. Cooper took me on my very first trip to Montana and Utah. He took me to my first Draft Test and on a journey that brought new, dear friends to our life. He helps to keep memories of our beloved Mesa always fresh.

Cooper Whitbey. One of my kid’s friends said Cooper is the best dog because he’s so happy that you can’t help but feel happy around him.

Cooper 4.jpg

Cooper loves his sticks. He can’t move as fast as he used to so he also likes to stand in the yard and bark while things are going on around him. But most of all he loves laying around the house waiting for his next belly scrub. He can still go for a walk in the mountains and pee on all the trees but it takes him a few days to recuperate. But just try to keep him out of the truck (even though he can’t get in by himself anymore:)

This dog. I love every day of all eleven years of him.

A very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Cooper — they do not come much kinder than him or more wonderful than his terrific family.
