My Wild Weekend

I hardly know where to start.

Oh.

Begin at the flag.

Not to scale! “X” is a food drop.

Six turn track for Capella on Friday — she did great! Given that she has a track in an April 28th test, this was super encouraging.

Capella after the track

On Saturday morning I volunteered at the Scentwork trial. In the afternoon, my team and I worked on the house.

Rosebud: What’s in here? Cat toys?

Pozy: What?! I meant to add polka dots to my backside.

Harper: Nice! A new bed.

Sparkle: Do you need this?

Pozy: You left the paint can opener thingee on the floor. Again.

You get the idea. My team is not quite as helpful as one might hope.

Painting was involved. I am accumulating quite the collection of paint cans, which are useful in holding security cameras. Who knew?!

I got it all done and then took dogs on a quick walk. This is Sparkle saying “hey” to the neighbor.

Then I jumped on a Zoom party for my sister.

Then — at about 8:45 pm I let Claire and Sparkle in from the yard and immediately knew something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Very, very wrong.

Claire had a frothy mouth. I checked her gums — they were pale. I checked her abdomen.

We were in the car on the way to the emergency vet within minutes.

She went right off to surgery.

Because she has not had enough surgeries in her lifetime.

I stayed until Claire was safely out of surgery — I arrived home at 3:00 a.m.

Bloat is a Big Giant Deal. Life threatening. Claire’s stomach and spleen twisted — she now has no spleen.

There is no solid evidence about what causes bloat and the associated torsion. I feed my dogs three times a day specifically to avoid large meals. I do not use raised bowls. I avoid exercise after meals. And so on.

The truth is that random bad sh!t happens — and it happened to Claire last night.

We can imagine we are safe because we do X, Y and Z — and don’t do A, B, and C. And yes, maybe that makes us feel better.

Or at least smug.

But none of it stops random bad sh!t from happening.

Darn it.

So far Claire is doing REALLY well. Like — surprisingly well according to the excellent veterinarians who are caring for her.

And I am doing everything I can to help.

I wore my most lucky Lucky Socks today.

I wore her special tie-dyed High in Trial obedience shirt.

And I brought the extra lucky Lucky Happy Hippie Heart when I visited her today.

After all, I am an expert in dealing with random bad sh!t. Or if not an expert — at least, very experienced at it!

So circling back to the start flag — no tracking test for Capella next week because we need close eyeballs on Claire for the next little while. No worries — there are other tests but there is only one Claire.

Send some good thoughts for my girl ❤️

And I sure hope your weekend was less eventful than mine — and involved more sleep!

Congratulations to Kadi!

Wildflower Kadi had her agility debut last weekend.

She earned her NJP! Congratulations to Team Kadi.

❤️

Her littermate, Pozy, sends her congratulations as well but wonders if there is a title for being helpful? She is a Champion Helper!

I am back to work on the house. Yesterday I had window cleaners here and WOW! What a difference!

Happy Wednesday!

Home!

I left Purina Farms on Sunday morning drove the 1,620 miles, arriving home just 34 hours later. I was even home early enough to unpack the van!

The Specialty week is like stepping into an alternate reality. Normal life just slips away. I think that is a good thing to experience because it gives us a vantage point to evaluate normal life — is that the kind of life we want to live?

There is a lot of thinking time in all those miles!

There were so many wonderful parts about the Specialty week but a definite high point was seeing dogs who carry small pieces of my heart. In no particular order, here are the Kaibab dogs I got to see during the week.

Sparkler Ruthie and her human, Lori, also had a rental RV and were parked right next to me.

I saw both of them a lot — lucky me! Ruthie rocked the Scentwork trial ⭐️

On the other side of Lori was iPup Tag with his human, Tina, her twin sister, Tami, and Tami’s dog, Wiley. This is Tag and Tina — he was Oldest Qualifier in both Scentwork and Rally!

And here is Tag with his littermate, Sparkle. Both will be 11 in June 🍀

On the other side of me was Dianne and Gordon with Sparkler Jordan, and her canine siblings, Terrie and Hunter.

Jordan and her human were well-honored at the Annual Awards Banquet — Jordan picked up her Grand Master Draft Dog award and Dianne received the AKC Sportspersonship Award — a super big deal and well-deserved! Congratulations, Dianne!

Bridget drove four hours each way to spend a few hours with all of us one day, bringing along Wildflower Kitsap.

He is GORGEOUS!!!! Wow. It was so great to see him and his human again — so much gratitude to Bridget for making the effort ❤️

Alison and Tom also rented an RV and were just a few trailers over — they brought Sparkler Kiri and Bright Star Zuber.

Zuber has a full set of draft genes — and some bonus ones — the draft test was no problem for Team Zuber.

It was SO great to see all of them.

Down the RV road a few spots was Moonshadow Andy, his awesome person, and his wonderful canine sister.

Andy

Don’t you just want to kiss all those freckles?!

It was like a little village in the RV area — so fun. Except that one night we were evacuated to the Event Center because of a tornado warning. Minor detail!

Seeing how much the dogs are loved and enjoying their lives was beyond wonderful.

Thank you to all who are sharing their lives with a puppy (or puppies) who started off their time on earth with me ❤️
