Growing!

Daisy moves to four meals a day now from her usual of three. As you can see from this photo I took minutes ago, things are getting crowded in there…

That is Harper behind her — normally, they are similar in size.

I am a fan of variety when it comes to feeding dogs because I am not convinced anyone has the right and true answer, and yes — sometimes discussion of how and what to feed dogs feels a bit like which church one should attend.

Food is more than simply calories and nutrients — the gut microbiome needs to be considered as well, for example — and so I do my best with the available and changing information that exists about healthy eating. Our dogs eat cooked homemade food and different kibbles and sardines once or twice a week and so on — a variety of foods, including whole foods, in moderation.

A healthy and sound puppy starts with a healthy pregnancy. In addition to a good diet, Daisy has been taking a quality fish oil supplement and enjoys regular walks. However, all vigorous activities — like agility — stopped when she was bred and because we know stress impacts developing babies, Daisy’s life is easy and happy.

And speaking of happy, this is Claire from this morning’s walk…

I hope your Wednesday is wonderful!

Timing is Everything

As many of you know, we have had a series of disappointments in the breeding department over the past 3+ years. When one breeds these dogs out of love, the loss of planned new babies with their bright futures is hard on the heart. It has been hard on mine.

When I got back from spending time in Utah with my post-surgery daughter, I had two girls in season and a pandemic looming.

We bred both girls.

We had fresh chilled semen shipped in for Claire — she did not get pregnant.

Major’s family kindly let him spend a few days at our house — as a result, Daisy is pregnant.

Very pregnant.

Our kitchen is not done. There is construction stuff throughout the house. So many things are still packed up in the boxes that fill the downstairs. I need to finish my grading. I miss my kids and my grandbabies. My friend died, leaving his wife — one of my besties — shattered. Needed medical screenings are being postponed, leaving someone dear worried and vulnerable. Older adults live in isolation. And so on.

All around me — and you — is loss and grief and chaos.

It seems like a perfect time to have a litter of puppies.

The Daily Q: NEWS

It went like this...

I had all manner of plans for Spring and Summer — of course I did!

The plans included showing Daisy, who is all set to start accumulating titles in the manner of a Kaibab Girl.

And then a Pandemic arrived and suggested a bit of a detour.

And so Daisy is starting with Motherhood and then will accumulate her titles.

What can I say about that??! It is, after all, how I did things — kids first and then all those titles/degrees. The Easy Way is overrated.

Daisy was bred to GCH Pinnacle’s Josey Wales AXP OJP DD SCN TKN FDC CGC (“Major”); their puppies are due on/about May 24.

Can you just guess how thrilled and excited I am?!
