Puppy Life Tips

Sleep matters — so does coffee ☕️ This explains two things about how I raise my puppy.

First, I gave up “crate training” baby puppies long ago. Okay — that is not exactly true because my dogs all ride comfortably in crates when in the van, including Starry G. I have safety issues.

What I gave up was putting a baby puppy in a crate at night. Until my puppy can sleep all night without needing to potty, she is in a small pen in the living room with a washable potty pad.

Puppies are used to being contained in this way and sleep matters, and so this all just makes sense to me. I use that particular pen because it is sturdy and does not tip over like an x-pen. I have it placed on remnant marmoleum.

Some puppies will not tip an xpen —Sparkle was respectful of the shortest xpen throughout her entire life. Starry G, on the other paw, is absolutely fearless — her response to a knocked over xpen is, “whatever.” This is a puppy who wags her tail at the vacuum!! 😂

Cindy told me about these washable pee pads, and they are wonderful.

I like them because they don’t slip, which means they stay in place. And I have washed and washed and washed them, and they show no sign of giving up the ghost.

Once the puppy is sleeping through the night, she will move to the bedroom in an extra large crate; she will be ready for the crate by then.

Okay — so that covers sleep. Now for coffee.

I am ridiculously possessive of my mornings. I get a lot done before most people are even awake — work, writing, setting intentions for the day, etc. But a puppy wakes up ready to go, and their needs are also important.

Enter the Toppl.

Before going to bed, I fill it with half of Starry G’s homemade breakfast and freeze it. In the morning, I fill it with the other half of breakfast.

I discovered through trial and error that if it was 100% frozen she got bored and did not finish it, and if it was 100% not frozen, she was done in ten or so minutes.

Half frozen and half not frozen is working perfectly. I get a solid 45 minutes of morning coffee time, and she expends some of that crazy puppy morning energy working on her breakfast. #winwin

After breakfast and morning play, she conks out for a couple of hours to recharge ❤️

And speaking of puppies, Han Solo Sapphire is doing so well.

Isn’t that just so amazing and wonderful? 💙

Han Solo Sapphire Discharge Day

Han Solo Sapphire is home in time to celebrate his three month birthday.

The procedure was a resounding success. To give you an idea of how successful — after a week of staying quiet to give the incision time to heal, he gets to do all the normal Berner things. He can do draft!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, when he gets older.

And because of that procedure — he gets to grow older 😭💙🎉

Starting his list of blessings.

This feels unreal — like I just witnessed a miracle.

Thank you to Tricia and Dave ensuring Han Solo Sapphire got the very best care — and so so quickly ❤️ And thanks to all of you for sending up good thoughts, wearing Lucky Socks, and being part of his community of caring 🙏

And Now We Wait (Updates Included)

Han Solo (fka Sapphire) has been handed over to the staff at the University of Minnesota.

Tricia and Dave are waiting there at the hospital, and I am waiting anxiously here in Boise. My Lucky Socks are on. The High in Trial Extra Lucky Happy Hippie Heart from the 2023 Specialty is in my pocket.

Hearts can be mended and this puppy deserves that gift.

Please join me in sending all the right good wishes to Minnesota today for our little guy, his humans, and the staff who are caring for him 🙏

Update #1

No update yet on the puppy but I have heard from two people that donating towards his bill wasn’t straightforward so I called and got the scoop.

  1. You can call the Cashier directly at 612-624-2256. They are short-staffed and if you get a recording, don’t bother leaving a message. Instead, hang up and call the hospital at 612-612-626-8387.

  2. Sit through all the options and you will eventually get a live human who will have the ability to take a credit card payment. You can tell them the cashier is short-staffed and you were told they could do the payment.

  3. You will need the Client Number: 549418.

  4. Thank you.

Update #2

🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Tricia reports that, “The surgeon said he is very happy with how the procedure went. The tricuspid valve is far enough from the stricture that they were able to use the cutting balloon without concern of harming the valve. Did multiple inflations to break down the ring of strictures. Pressures were already showing lower in surgery. He is in recovery and will be transferred to ICU later this afternoon.”

🥹🙏🍾💙

Update #3

The surgeon called Tricia to report that Han Solo Sapphire is awake, alert, and getting lots of cuddles in the ICU. The surgeon is very happy with how well Han Solo Sapphire is doing, and they expect to discharge him tomorrow — isn’t this all so so wonderful and amazing?!

Update #4

Tricia and Dave got to visit Han Solo Sapphire.

He is doing SO WELL! See for yourself 💙

🎉🏥💙🍾

#miracle

Fun Fact — to keep puppies safe in the hospital, they are housed with their feline patients 🐈 Han Solo Sapphire should feel right at home with all that cat energy 😻💙

WHEW. What a day!

Thank you for your support and for caring about this special — and very lucky — puppy 💙 You are so appreciated.
