Whelping Readiness Weekend, Day Two

Penny sends such wonderful photos! This is Zeus and Buttercup, littermates from the Wildflowers, enjoying a break from their romp together…

The Puppy Palooza Readiness Weekend is proceeding well. The whelping box is up…

This is the view into the area from the kitchen — you can see my desk is right there.

A risk to puppies in the first week or two is that they can accidentally be suffocated by their mom, who cannot count. We, however, can count and will be watching and counting constantly to ensure their safety.

The evening sky last night predicted the genders with a showy display of pinks and blues…

I have settled on puppy names and will assign collars to the names today.

New families may certainly change their names but while they are with us the puppies have real names. They are so much more than a collar color, after all.

Today is also laundry day — all the puppy linens will be washed and readied. You would be amazed at how much laundry is involved with a litter.

Finally, today is the day we start taking Claire’s temperature four times a day. Here is Claire’s actual pregnancy journal entry from this morning following the start of that fun adventure…

I hope your day is filled with adventures — but hopefully not involving a thermometer in the backside…

Whelping Readiness Weekend Arrives

I love this photo of Wildflower, Kjempe…

CUTE and clean after a bath. He is soon to be a big brother and an uncle — Daisy is his mom but Claire has the same dad as the Wildflowers. Brother and uncle :)

Whelping Area #1 now has vinyl flooring covering the white foam…

The whelping box will sit on top of the flooring — that is on today’s agenda.

This is a look into that area from the kitchen — if you look closely you can see the corner of the foam/flooring behind Pozy and Harper and also the bottom of the gate…

Here is Daisy in that area…

The area, which is our dining room/area, is where Claire and her babies will be situated. It can easily be blocked off from dog traffic — I have a feeling Claire will not tolerate any other dogs around her babies, especially while they are very new. My desk is in the same area — eyeballs will be on those puppies 24/7.

Last night I dreamed Claire had nine puppies — what is your guess?

Bracing Herself & Walkabout

Claire’s brace arrived…

Claire's brace.jpg

She will spend the next few days getting used to it and making sure the fit is good. When Claire is with her puppies, she will not wear the brace — the purpose is to stabilize the knee when she is moving around.

The brace also offers a hint about the litter theme.

Meanwhile, Dear Husband has been off on a walkabout through southern Utah and northern Arizona for the past week or so.

Kim at North Rim.jpg

I think that shot is at/near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I certainly cannot begrudge him an adventure before he settles into his role as Chief Nighttime Puppy Nanny for the next several weeks.

Have a wonderful and happy day — make it so!
