Getting To Yes

Training Tip: Word of the Day is REDIRECT.

Moonshadow Wally Neil

No” or “Don’t do that” creates a focus on the undesired behavior and also opens up a void — what is the puppy or human supposed to do instead?

When you see or experience an undesired behavior, shift immediately to “Do this instead.

Capella likes to chew my desk chair. If I give her an error message like “NO!” how is she to understand what I am telling her? Am I saying NO! for her desire to be close to me? For quietly hanging out and chewing?

And seriously — how fair is it to tell a teething baby not to chew?!

My strategy — reach down and give her an alternative to my chair, and push her a few inches away with the new chew thing so the chair is not so easily in reach.

If she goes back to the chair, clearly my alternative was not a good one so I try something more chew-worthy.

No error message. No drama. Just redirection. Easy peasy.

No” should be banned from our puppy vocabulary. Instead, get to “YES” by using smart redirection.

Training Tip

Goal: I want my puppy to learn her name and to respond to it (look/come towards me).

How: Most of the kibble I feed will be as training treats. I toss one piece of kibble on the floor near her and take 1 - 2 steps back. As she finishes the piece of kibble, I say, “pup-pup-Pellie” and when she looks/starts to come to me I begin the praising and hand her a second piece of kibble when she reaches me.

Repeat over and over in 30-or-so second sessions 3 - 4 times a day.

What to do if she doesn’t respond? Evaluate what I did wrong. Did I toss the food too far? Are there too many distractions? Did I call her before she finished the treat? Is my voice not happy and friendly enough?

Today adventurers: Dear Husband and Lyra…

Lyra ad Kim.jpg

They have just taken off — think good thoughts for a successful journey.

And while Dear Husband and Lyra are in the air, Metis became Merlin and headed home to Bozeman to live with Megan and her family…

Later

There are some who just need a puppy — and help getting her. And so Dear Husband and Lyra flew today to Anchorage…

Suki.jpg

A puppy cannot make it all better but she can remind us that there are still smiles left in the world. Lyra is now Suki, and ready to take on her important job. Kudos to Dear Husband for his role in making this happen.

Suki Lyra is not the only one with an important job. Moonshadow Portia is now Maple and living with Lee, Adri and their two sons.

Both Lee and Adri are counselors and so Maple Portia was selected to serve as a Therapy Dog in their important work with children. They have patiently waited for one of our puppies, and their patience was well rewarded — Maple Portia is perfect for that work.

And how awesome is this — we all live in the same town.

And so if you have kept track of all the departures and new homes, this is not a surprise…
